After arriving at the expedition base station, you will be shown a safety/instructional video on the operation of the AMI Rugged Series Inflatable boat as you are provided with top-of-the-line rain gear, hats, gloves, wool socks, boots and safety glasses. Then you'll be broken into groups and follow your guide to the harbor and board your boat for a nearly 30-mile exploration of the Tongass Forest coast.
Throughout this coastal exploration, the guide will be delivering an informative narration covering the area's history, geology, culture and ecology through the use of on-board marine radios, relayed via a low-use frequency.
You will travel caravan-style as you make your way to your first stop, Saxman Native Village. Here you'll hear a brief discussion of the Tlingit culture and view some of their famous totem poles.
Next, you'll head past Nichols Passage in search of whales, porpoises, seals and other marine life, then round Mountain Point and head deep into George Inlet. Here, your guide will take you on an exploration of hidden coves and inlets, while you keep an eye out for the wildlife that calls this area home.
Half way into your trip, you'll make a brief rest stop at a rustic wilderness camp, where you'll be given a hot beverage and a snack, and be warmed by an open fire.
Your return trip to Ketchikan will involve making several short stops along the way for wildlife viewing and to enjoy the scenic splendor of the area.
Upon your return to Ketchikan, you'll dock your boat, return to the expedition base and shed the rain gear while warming up with another hot beverage, or enjoy a complimentary beer or glass of wine. A guide will then escort you back to your ship.
