George Inlet Lodge Wilderness Crabbing Adventure/ Wilderness Exploration & Crab Feast/ Wilderness Exploration Cruise & Crab Feast

Cannery

Tour Description

Your scenic, narrated drive from Ketchikan to the George Inlet Lodge will follow the coastline, and you'll be passing Saxman Village, canneries, an old sawmill and see several waterfalls.

Upon arrival at the Lodge, you'll be issued foul weather gear and then board a 36-foot enclosed catamaran. You'll be cruising up the George Inlet on a 2-hour, seven-mile journey that explores the region's history and natural beauty.

As you cruise past the George Inlet Cannery, your guide will teach you about fish traps and relate tales about the "fish pirates" that plagued the area in the time before statehood. Further up the inlet, you'll view the site of an abandoned short-seam gold mine and the Mahoney Glacial Cirque, which features snow-capped mountains and 2,000-foot waterfalls. A river at the bottom of the valley is host to salmon, bears, eagles and other wildlife. Then you'll cross the fjord and see the Tongass rainforest in all its splendor.

Next, you'll head for a remote cove that is home to a Dungeness crab fishery. Volunteers will help pull the crab pots, and while these crab are set free, you'll have the opportunity to see them up close and learn about their anatomy and life cycle. Important measurements and statistics are recorded for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Once the pots are reset, you'll return to the Lodge for a sumptuous crab feast. The rustic George Inlet Lodge was once an early 1900s cannery bunkhouse, and is a perfect venue for your meal. After a quick lesson in the art of crab cracking, you will be served Dungeness crab, an Oriental salad, steamed baby red potatoes and cheesecake smothered with Alaska blueberries.

Following the meal, you will re-board your transportation and return to the Cruise Ship docks in Ketchikan.
